The imperial palace in Beijing is the imperial palace of the Ming and qing dynasties, formerly known as the Forbidden City, located in the center of the central axis of Beijing, is the essence of ancient Chinese palace architecture. With three main halls as the center, there are more than 70 large and small palaces, more than 9,000 rooms. It is one of the largest and best preserved ancient wooden structures in the world.

The construction of the imperial palace in Beijing began in 1406, the fourth year of yongle emperor mingcheng (1406). It was modeled on the imperial palace in nanjing and completed in 1420. It is a rectangular city, 961 meters long from north to south, 753 meters wide from east to west, surrounded by 10 meters high wall, outside the city has a 52 meters wide moat. The buildings in the Forbidden City are divided into the outer court and the inner court. The center of the outer court is the hall of supreme harmony, the hall of harmony, and the hall of preserving harmony. The center of the inner court is the dry qing palace, taidian, kun ning palace, collectively referred to as the third palace, the emperor and the queen live in the palace. [1]

The imperial palace in Beijing is honored as the first of the five major palaces in the world (Versailles palace in France, Buckingham Palace in Britain, the White House in the United States and the kremlin in Russia). It was listed as a world cultural heritage site in 1987.
